Q15 What is a Fiber Optic Thermometer?

Because the Fiber Optic Thermometers do not use a metal for their sensors, they are optimum temperature measuring instruments when measuring the temperature in an environment averse to metals (under a high frequency, microwave or high voltage).

Principle:
Anritsu Meter’s Fiber Optic Thermometers have employed a fluorescence relaxation time measurement method for temperature measurement.
When an extremely thin fluorescent substance (magnesium fluorescent body) attached to the end of an optical fiber is exposed to a flash through the optical fiber, the attenuation of fluorescent brightness changes greatly according to the temperature.
Because the fluorescent relaxation characteristic of the magnesium fluorescent body responds to the temperature almost completely, this fluorescence relaxation time can be measured and converted into the temperature.
